ReCore

Recore: Definitive Edition Review – A Hidden Gem
ReCore promotional art

ReCore was released in 2016 exclusively for the Xbox One. It was a third person shooter plat former. It was directed by the man who made Metroid Prime. This game is just good.

The gameplay is a third person shooter, Violet shoots her rifle while teaming up with Frames, robots with personalities. Not only do the frames help with combat, but they are crucial for traversing the land. A spider frame helps with crawling on walls, the ape frame breaks down weak walls, and so much more.

The story revolves around Violet, a young girl and the sole survivor of a failed colonization mission to a foreign planet. Her and her frame Mack, are on a mission to look for mysterious Prismatic cores, and her father.

ReCore is available for Xbox One for a pretty cheap price, pick it up if you want to feel like playing an old ps2 game!

Final Fantasy XII

FF XII Promotional Art

Final Fantasy XII is the most underrated entry in the series. It was originally released in 2006 for the Playstation 2. FF XII realeased near the end of the PS2 life cycle, basically that’s when the PS3 came out, and this game kind of flew under the radar, which is a shame because this game is cool.

FF XII’s combat system is similar to the KOTOR games, it is an rpg to the core. When you see an enemy you have the option to attack in a certain way. You can attack with your weapon, or you can throw a bomb, or you can blow them up with magic. I played the PS2 version back in the day, but I am playing through the PS4 version currently. What makes the PS4 version interesting, and better in my opinion is it restricts each character to have 2 Zodiacs, or classes. You have 12 to choose from, and you can technically make everyone the same class, but thats BORING, and it makes the game alot more interesting. Each Zodiac masters in a certain weapon. Knights speacializes in swords and shields, Ulaun in Spears, Black mage in staffs, an many more.

The story revolves around a ragtag band of skypirates, Vaan, Penelo, Ashe, Balthier, Fran, and Basch. Penelo is Vaan’s best friend, Fran and Balthier are partners in crime, Ashe is a rouge princess, and Basch is an ex-knight. Everyone bands together to prevent the Imperials from taking over the world. What I love about the world of this game is that its like a medieval, fantasy star wars. There are many different races in the world, and this makes it more interesting than basic humans.

FF XII The Zodiac Age is the remake of the game, and the best way to play it. I got my copy for 15 bucks at Walmart. Try this game! You won’t regret it!

Phantasy Star Universe

Phantasy Star Universe (PSU) came out in 2006 for the Playstation 2, PC, and Xbox 360. I played the Xbox 360 version. PSU is an mmorpg with a single-player story mode. I played this game back in middle school around the time I got my 360. It was pretty much my first mmo. So this game holds a special place in my heart.

Gameplay for PSU is fun and easy to get into! When you first start, you get to create your character. You can choose from 4 races, Humans, Newmans, Beasts, and Casts. Humans, are, well, humans, Newmans are elf like, Beasts are tall, and strong, and Casts are robots. Each race has their own advantages, but you can choose what you want to be. Then, you can choose your class, each specializing in certain weaponry, and there are A LOT. Swords, pistols, spears, daggers, snipers, cannons, claws, rods, staffs, dual blades, and a crap ton more. The combat in the game, is easy to understand. If you used melee weapons, you have combos you can do to increase damage, and devastate enemies. Ranged weapons like snipers, and pistols are, well, guns! You shoot them, and you can apply different elemental rounds to suit any situation. And since this was an mmo, you can team up with random people or your friends!

Sadly the servers for the game have been shut down in 2012. But I’ve been looking into a private server on pc and apparently its still going on. If you find a copy of the game, the single player is still worth it to play through!

Lost Planet

Lost Planet 1 combat

Lost Planet Extreme Condition was a third person shooter developed by Capcom, and released in 2006 for the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. I played the PC Colonies edition. At first Lost Planets seems like a basic third person shooter, but it ain’t. In LP you have access to a grappling hook, providing a lot of vertical level design. You face off against dangerous creatures known as Akrid, and Snow Pirates. Around the level, you can find a lot of weapons, and thermal energy. Since it is so cold on the planet, you need to constantly collect it to stay alive. Sometimes you can come across mech-like vehicles called Vital Suits. VS’s drain your Thermal energy, but they can use powerful weapons only VSs can use.

The story of the game revolves around a Snow Pirate named Wayne Holden, the son of a leader of a local militia. After seeing his father getting crushed by a giant akrid, Wayne becomes the sole survivor of a failed mission, going into a coma when his VS runs out of thermal energy. Wayne then gets rescued by a small team a mercenaries. They help him up, and then begins to work for them, and their plan to restore the warmth to a dying world.

Lost Planet was recently brought backwards compatible for Xbox one. That is probably the best place to play it.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

TC’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier in-game screenshot

TC’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier is badass. It was released in summer 2012 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It was a third person shooter based on Tom Clancy’s books about the legendary team of Ghosts.

FS followed the story of a team of Ghosts code named Hunter. The squad consists of Kozak, Ghost Lead, Pepper, and 30K. After losing a fellow squad code named predator to a dirty bomb, Hunter squad is assigned to find out who was behind the killings and prevent another World War. After they supposedly succeed however, they were greeted with a new, more deadly threat…

FS’s game play is a cover based third person shooter. It features a 1 to 4 player campaign, and multiplayer. But the campaign is what makes the game amazing. You and 3 other friends can team up and take on the enemy on every mission, working together to survive and complete the mission. The gun customization is some of the best in gaming right now, and the most detailed. You can customize almost everything from barrels, attachments, gas chambers, and many more.

Since the game is called Future soldier, you use futuristic weaponry and gadgets to accomplish mission with ease. You have a drone that can fly and drive along the ground, useful for spotting enemies from below, and stunning enemies on the ground.

FS is a must play if you are a Ghost Recon fan, and want to play one of Ubisoft’s best titles, I highly recommend this game. It is currently backwards compatible on Xbox One.

Final Fantasy XIII Series

FF XIII Box Art

BEFORE YOU READ HEAR ME OUT.

Final Fantasy is a near and dear series to my heart. I think Final Fantasy is a prime example of what jrpgs should be. And let me be clear here. I love the Final Fantasy XIII series of games. FF XIII is a jrpg series developed by Square Enix, and was a controversial entry for many fans. For FF fans, it was either you hate it, or you love it. ANYWAY, back to the post.

Final Fantasy XIII released in 2009 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and was the first Final Fantasy to be released in HD. The game featured stunning, and beautiful visuals at the time, and today is regarded as one of the best looking jrpgs of all time.

Gameplay is similar to past FF games. Kind of. You command your character by chaining abilities together to execute rapidly. For example, chain 3 attack commands together, and you will attack 3 times. Or you can chain Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder together, you will execute those 3 commands rapidly. Eventually you can unlock new abilities and stat boosts for your character. There are also 6 different class types, each separating the many abilities you do.

The story of FF XIII is very gripping, and has a cute charm to it. It revolves around 6 characters. Lightning, a ex soldier fighting to save her sister. Snow, an optimistic hot head who is engaged to Lightnings sister Serah. Sazh, a middle aged man avenging his son. Hope, a young boy avenging his mother. Vanille, an optimistic village girl who travels with Fang. And Fang, a sort of guardian for Vanille. Throughout the game, the party will seperate and join back together as they all have different ideals to saving the world and fulfil there mission. Near the beginning of the game, each character is branded with the mark of the L’cie. L’cie each have a mission assigned to the bearer. The bearer has to find out what there mission is, and complete it before the mark grows larger and turns the bearer into a Cieth, which are human turned monster who have failed their mission.

I enjoy the story in this game because it is very gripping, and the voice acting in the game is very well done. And when everyone eventually splits apart, they all have their story arc, and you eventually find out what they’re fighting for. My favorite story in this game is between Lightning and Hope. Lightning trying to look for her destiny for the mark, Hope is helping her, hoping to find his mission too. With Lightning being a tough ex soldier, Hope is just a kid. Throughout their arc, Lightning begins to care about Hope and becomes good friends with him.

Final Fantasy XIII is an awesome game series. There are two other games I want to mention if you want to try out the games. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the second game where you play as Serah, Lightnings sister. And then Lightning Returns FFXIII, the final game to close up the story and tie up loose ends. All three of these games are backwords compatible on Xbox One. If you want to try them out, I highly recommend getting them on the Xbox One, because their graphics are updated to 4K. If you didn’t like FF XIII when is came out, give it another chance.
